Mercury Retrograde and Communication in Your Relationship
Galaxia describes what a chart shows, not what will happen. How we write about astrology →

Mercury retrograde has become shorthand for “everything is going wrong.” Texts get misread, plans fall through, and someone blames the sky. It is the most famous transit in astrology, and one of the most exaggerated.
This retrograde begins October 24, 2026, and ends November 13, and Mercury stays in Scorpio for the whole stretch. If you are in a relationship you intend to keep, here is a more useful way to think about it.

Mercury is the planet of communication, thinking, and information. About three times a year it appears to move backward as seen from Earth, an optical effect of orbital geometry. That lasts about three weeks.
Astrologers read these windows as periods for review: revisiting, rethinking, and re-reading rather than launching new things. In terms of communication, the traditional idea is that misunderstandings and delays are more likely and that it pays to slow down.
Be honest about the evidence
There is no good evidence that Mercury retrograde causes technology failures or accidents. Research on the topic is thin, and much of the effect is likely confirmation bias: when we expect problems, we notice them.
That does not make it useless. Any period that reminds you to double-check assumptions is not a bad thing. You can use the astrology as a prompt without treating it as a cause.
Why Scorpio matters
This retrograde sits in Scorpio, the sign associated with depth, privacy, trust, and what goes unsaid. Where a retrograde in an air sign might be about mixed-up logistics, one in Scorpio is more about the underneath of communication: what someone actually means, what has been withheld, what you have been circling around.
For a couple, that could look like:
- Revisiting a conversation that never got resolved
- Noticing that you have been assuming rather than asking
- Finding out that something small was hiding something bigger
Again, these are themes to look for, not events to expect.
Practical habits for the window
Say the thing twice. If it matters, confirm it: “Just to check, you mean Thursday and not Friday?” This is good practice anyway.
Ask before assuming intent. When a message lands badly, ask what was meant. Do not answer the version you imagined.
Do not send the long text while upset. Draft it, wait, then decide.
Return to old conversations deliberately. If the retrograde nudges something up, treat it as an invitation to finish it, at a calm time, not in the middle of an argument.
Save big decisions for after November 13. Reviewing is easy. Concluding is better done when Mercury is direct.

Text description of this diagram
Title: ‘Mercury retrograde: Oct 24 to Nov 13, in Scorpio the whole time.’ Five habits: 1 Say the thing twice. 2 Ask before assuming intent. 3 Draft it, wait, then send. 4 Return to old talks calmly. 5 Save big decisions for after Nov 13.
Which of you will feel it?
Like any transit, it lands on a chart, not a Sun sign. It is more likely to be noticeable if either of you has planets in Scorpio, or Mercury, Mars, or the Moon in close contact with where it is moving. If Mercury is prominent in your partner’s chart and not yours, one of you may feel the retrograde more than the other.
You can check where it falls for both of you by adding your charts in Galaxia. If you want to understand why the same transit can feel different for two people, read our post on Uranus retrograde and your relationships, which uses the same approach.
The takeaway
Mercury retrograde is not a curse. It is an excuse, and a good one, to slow down and check in with the person you are closest to. You do not need the sky’s permission to do that, but it does not hurt to have a reminder.
